Sonia Hewitt has been nominated for Teacher of the Year

Sonia was ‘over the moon’ to hear of her nomination for the Pride of Guernsey Teacher of the Year award.

‘She puts a smile on everybody’s face all throughout school,’ said her nominator, who wishes to remain anonymous. 

They have been taught maths by Sonia for five years.

‘Even on the worst of days she’s still smiling. I’ve learnt a lot from Miss Hewitt, not just maths but to smile and be happy.

‘She makes everybody’s day even though she’s a busy woman. She lights up a room and used to be the heart and soul of La Mare.

‘She’s such an inspirational and outgoing teacher. She’s inspired me to have a career in teaching when I’m older.’

After 19 years teaching maths at La Mare De Carteret High School - 15 spent as the subject’s head - this May Sonia left to move to Les Varendes.

‘Everything I’ve come to be today was learnt at La Mare,’ Sonia said.

‘I’m sad to say goodbye to La Mare, I’ve loved having a team to work with and learn from every day.

‘It’s the students for me – to be part of another person’s journey and watch them leave well-rounded academically and pastorally. 

‘It’s nice to know that you’ve somehow been part of that.’
