‘Her support and passion are truly inspiring,’ said her nominator, who wishes to remain anonymous.
Jana teaches the six-week independent advocacy course at the College of FE.
The course enables adults to become an advocate on behalf of someone else, often someone who feels that they do not have the ability to speak up for themselves. They are a crucial bridge of communication and support to represent their person’s
wishes to ensure that they are heard.
‘She was always eager to help when things got tricky,’ her nominator said.
Her nominator landed in hospital during the ‘mentally draining, emotional course’, and Jana continued to support them.
‘I felt like giving up, but she made it so easy for me.’
Jana confessed to being ‘very surprised’ at her nomination. She loves the variety that comes with her job, from the adults to the teenagers who she sees go on to become apprentices.
‘As an adult learner, I sometimes felt embarrassed about needing extra assistance, but Jana was always understanding and supportive,’ her nominator said.
‘She’s relatable, she has interesting stories of her own. She’s not just textbook, it’s more personal.’
Her nominator said that everyone in Jana’s course has their own reasons and stories for being part of it, which makes it especially impactful.
