Jonny Breedt has been nominated for the Teacher of the Year Award

After starting his teaching career 25 years ago in South Africa, Jonny Breedt then moved to the UK in 2001 before finding himself in Guernsey five years ago.

Since then, he has loved his work as head of Year 8 and as a mathematics teacher at La Mare de Carteret High School – with his nominator saying his efforts have been ‘absolutely incredible’.

‘He puts every student first,’ they said. ‘When I first moved to the school my grandad had cancer and [Mr Breedt] was the most supportive teacher I had – he stuck with me all the way and whenever I was down or upset, he would find a way to lift me back up.’

Away from providing emotional support for his pupils, Mr Breedt has also been commended on his duty to spend as much time as possible with students in order for them to understand their work.

‘Without Mr Breedt, I don’t know where I’d be and he’s the reason I am becoming successful in and out of school.’
