Gearoid Lee has been nominated for Teacher of the Year

Gearoid Lee’s enthusiasm, care and motivation as head of PE at La Mare De Carteret High School has prompted a nomination for Teacher of the Year.

Loved by both students and parents, nominator Ulrike Maisch wanted to ‘give a little back’ to Mr Lee, after being impressed with him after their son joined the school two years ago.

‘In the first few weeks the schools competed in the Zedra XC – I saw Mr Lee running in the race next to one of his students who struggled, and he motivated him to keep going – that was just great to see.’

In addition to supporting students in school, Ulrike added Gearoid makes extra effort to cheer on pupils in external events too.

‘My son had a big athletics competition off-island [and] Mr Lee called me to ask how my son’s race went and even made sure to watch the live stream,’ Ulrike said. 

‘I just think it’s amazing that despite all the work for school and having to deal with other students, he remembered and showed interest. The job as a teacher is a tough one, yet he is always calm and friendly.

‘We need more teachers like him.’
