Lucy Rooney has been nominated for the Teacher of the Year award

Lucy Rooney joined St Martin’s Primary School nearly a decade ago to teach reception and she still finds ‘pure joy’ in helping children learn.

Her efforts both in school, as well as helping parents with problems at home, have led to her nomination from Katie Bennalick, who has had two of her children go through Ms Rooney’s classroom.

‘Ms Rooney is a fantastic teacher who goes above and beyond to help the children of reception,’ Katie said.

‘Whenever they have a problem whether it is a home or school problem, she is very proactive and solves things very quickly and efficiently – she is very empathetic.’

Lucy grew up in Guernsey before moving to Chichester for university. She then began her teaching career at another St Martin’s School in Brighton, before finding her way back to the island, where she has taught reception for nine years.

When told about her nomination, Lucy said it was ‘such an honour’ to be put forward.
