TEN YEARS ago, Naoko Mauger could not have imagined her daughter Ellie, who has Down syndrome, having enough confidence to tackle extra-curricular activities and additional learning opportunities at school.
However with Danielle Rowe’s help at Amherst Primary, she now comes home ‘with a big smile everyday’.
‘Ellie has been having so many great opportunities to challenge new things to develop various skills including social developments,’ Naoko said.
‘Ellie has joined all studies and projects with her classmates thanks to Miss Rowe.
'She used to be scared of heights, unstable activities and new environments, but this year she joined school camp and she participated in the canoe boat activity – and she had a fantastic time.’
In addition to Miss Rowe’s efforts with opportunities both inside and outside of the classroom, Naoko recognised the current Year 5 teacher’s ‘fantastic’ help in improving her daughter’s literacy skills with extra support provided by Mrs Humphrey, head of inclusion at Amherst Primary School, and teaching assistant Mrs Tostevin.
