WITH nearly two decades of teaching under her belt, Liz Curtis still very much enjoys the position and has just celebrated five years at the Guernsey Institute.
Her dedication and support as course leader and teacher of the public and protective services Btec course were two key factors for her nomination.
‘There are a diverse group of students, some with additional learning needs, and Liz manages to engage them all, providing accommodation or extra support where needed and maintaining their dignity and autonomy in decision making,’ her nominator said.
‘Some students have experienced difficult life events and she meets them all at their point of need and provides them with hope and belief in themselves – while supporting these individuals, she also manages to challenge the ambitious students in her classes.’
They added that the local course results were a testament to Liz’s hard work.
‘Liz is incredible – she understands there are some school leavers who are jaded by their previous education and provides an incredibly warm and affirming way of educating, valuing each individual student.
‘Her students go on to work in various public services such as enforcement or the military [and] some who were previously school-avoidant even go on to apply for university.’
