Mary Carey’s teaching career has, in her own words, been ‘a journey’.
She began teaching back in 1987 and jumped into a role at Herm Primary School after moving to the Bailiwick from the UK nearly twenty years ago – a ‘baptism of fire’ career move due to never having taught in Guernsey before. Despite this, Mary went on to teach at the school for 18 years and take on the position of head teacher before resigning earlier this year.
‘She’s the most brilliant teacher I’ve ever met,’ Ruby Dowding said, when nominating.
‘I live in Herm and [Mrs Carey] taught my sister Eva, who absolutely loved her with her whole heart.’
When reflecting on Mary Carey’s time on the island, Ruby remembered a nativity that the former head teacher organised during the summer of 2023 which doubled as Mary’s farewell event.
‘Ex-students, parents and everyone else were crying their eyes out as it was so heart-warming. Mary’s just the best teacher and we love her so much.’
Mary said she was very humbled by the nomination and the recognition gave her ‘comfort and confidence’ to continue teaching in the future.
