The Admiral Nurses have been nominated for Angel of the Year

Although the Admiral Nurse team is only a year old they have already made a significant impact on the island community.

Admiral Nurses provide support to the families and carers of those living with dementia. It is a branch service of Dementia UK, and this team is the first of its kind on the Bailiwick.

Carers of those with dementia often put all their time into looking after their loved ones, and their welfare can easily fall to the wayside.

‘There’s been such a need for this for such a long time,’ said Michelle Martel, one half of the two-woman team.

One incident in particular stood out in Michelle’s mind of how important their work is. 

Following one visit by the team, one carer said: ‘You’re the first person who’s asked how I’m doing in five years.’

‘Those words will always ring with me and Colette,’ Michelle said. 

‘Colette and Michelle have worked diligently to set up the Admiral Nurse Service in Guernsey,’ said their nominator for the Angel of the Year award, Sian Ogier.

‘I hear so many positive comments around what a difference they are making to the families and the person that I would like to nominate them for this award in recognition for their care, compassion and dedication.’
