Le Marchant Ward has been nominated for the Angel of the Year

‘The rehabilitation ward team at the hospital provides amazing support for victims of stroke, Parkinson’s, amputations and brain injuries,’ began their nominator, Timothy Parkes. 

He spent five months in the ward following a stroke while on holiday, which left him unable to move. 

‘The staff work tirelessly with patients, most of whom have difficulty engaging in conversation, mobility and daily functions. 

‘Their shifts are 12 hours long, day or night, with hardly enough time to recover before the next intense shift. 

‘The ward is a happy place, even for those that have to stay for many months. They organise social events for patients in their own time, contributing homemade cakes and entertainment. 

‘There was one patient who was there for 14 months. When you’re there that long it can feel like a prison sentence, but they really make it feel like home.

‘They gave me hope. Each member of the ward staff – from the nurses to the physios, to the OTs, the whole team – built my confidence to get back to as much normality as my body can cope with. 

‘They have truly gone above and beyond.’
