THE LATE Ruby Johns suffered from a string of sickness from August 2023 to March this year before sadly dying at the age of 95.
As she fought through a bowel obstruction in which the operation gave her only a 30% chance of surviving, a blood clot and a virus, there were several ‘Angels’ who helped her to live as colourful life as possible.
One host of ‘angels’ have been nominated for Pride of Guernsey, namely the team at the Giffard Ward, who have been put forward by Ruby’s daughter Roz Johns.
‘I would like to nominate the Giffard Ward for the care and attention Mum had on the two long stays she had with them,’ Roz said.
‘[That] and for the care they give other elderly patients which as it is meant to be a surgical ward has often been turned into an extension of a geriatric ward.’
The Giffard Ward has around 29 staff members at the time of writing, according to staff nurse Gemma Bourgaize, and they have faced a couple of ‘pretty tough years’ with hospital modernisation taking place around their ward.
In light of this, the recognition for their around-the-clock work ‘feels great’, she said.
