DAWN ROBIN started Guernsey Hedgehog Rescue over 35 years ago after realising there was no support available for them in the island.
‘Dawn has tirelessly devoted her time over the past 30 years to rehabilitating sick, injured and orphaned baby hedgehogs,’ said her nominator Lisa Mahy.
Dawn explained her devotion to the creatures.
‘They’re so good for gardens – they’ll eat all the bugs. They do no harm, they’re very gentle, they never bite. We deserve to give them something back.'
With her knowledge and expertise Dawn has saved countless lives of these little creatures.
‘She is one of the main reasons why Guernsey has such a healthy hog population,’ Lisa continued.
‘She’s dedicated her whole life to rescuing them.
‘She’s up two hours every night feeding injured and baby hedgehogs.
‘It would be lovely to see Dawn receive recognition for all her hard work.’
Dawn works every day of the year with only one volunteer helping her twice a week. In 2023, 390 hedgehogs passed through her sanctuary, and she believes they’re already into the hundreds in 2024.
‘I’m exhausted I must admit, but when you see another one released, it’s worth it,’ she said.
