To many, Cathy Wanyoike is known as secretary of the Commonwealth Society, voluntary consul for the Kenyan community and a contributor to the creation of the States policies on discrimination – to others, she is known as an ‘unsung hero’, ‘an inspiration to the community’ and ‘a welcoming mother’.
For six years, Cathy has ‘tirelessly’ dedicated herself to welcoming, supporting and integrating the Kenyan and African communities to Guernsey society through events, information or raising funds.
‘There are few people I admire more than her as she single-handedly took on the torch of bringing not just the Kenyan community but also the African community together to ensure that they all have access to support and inclusion,’ said one nominator.
‘She has gone over and above to organise and make all Kenyans and people of African origin feel at home and settled in Guernsey – we truly appreciate her,’ said another.
Around 50 other people nominated Cathy for Bailiwick Community Hero, after she recently organised participation in Le Pollet’s African portrait exhibition.
‘She has been a pillar and a great help to many, without discrimination, she has always been there ready to offer any support you might require to see you having a great stay in Guernsey.’
