Margaret and John Nicolle may have been looking forward to a quiet retirement following their respective teaching careers, however they now ‘work tirelessly’ for others as a core part of Age Concern Guernsey.
Mr and Mrs Nicolle are entering their 25th year of voluntary service, leading the St Martin’s Centre – Margaret organising charity events including the weekly Friday afternoon club and John supervising the voluntary bus drivers after starting as a driver himself.
The pair’s efforts have been recognised by both Pamela Preece and Roz Johns with Bailiwick Community Hero nominations.
‘[They are] more involved than ever, so much so that we are completely reliant on them,’ said Pamela Preece.
‘During this time the many past and present members, currently 250, along with their families are forever grateful for their continued hard work, dedicated and care – personally knowing everyone by name and helping them in any way they can.’
For Roz Johns, her late mother Ruby always loved to go to Friday club where they played bingo and ate home-made cakes, plus loved to go on holidays organised in previous years.
Unlike Age Concern UK, the Guernsey-based charity is totally voluntary run and celebrated its 30th anniversary last year.
