16-year-old Yehor came over from Ukraine to Guernsey and has excelled in his GCSEs at Les Varendes High School.
‘He is an incredible student, the other teachers love him, he is phenomenal,’ said Hilary Beasley his nominator.
Yehor is a very polite young man and works incredibly hard at everything he does.
‘Yehor has displayed resilience and an amazing work ethic,’ said Hilary, and she said that Yehor has been awarded a scholarship in the UK.
‘I feel special, a mixture of pride and happiness,’ said Yehor when he heard about his nomination. Being nominated for a local award makes Yehor feel like he is not a foreigner but on the same level as anyone else who lives in Guernsey.
‘The people are the nicest people, the Guernsey attitude is much nicer than anywhere else,’ said Yehor in response to the best thing about Guernsey.
Yehor has been learning English for the past eight years and found speaking a lot of English challenging at first but has gradually grown accustomed to the way people talk.
‘What you learn is always different to what people actually say,’ said Yehor.
