Blake Le Ber, 17, has breathed life back into what had been Delancey Park’s dilapidated community garden.
Blake, who has Down’s syndrome, took on the challenge with a grin on his face as he began clearing the brambles, and is at it almost every week.
He will soon finish his studies at Le Murier, and the community garden gives him some stability and a project to work on in the future.
He has plans to grow vegetables there – especially his favourite, parsnips.
He has also been forming partnerships with other organisations to help out, with Le Friquet enlisted in providing compost for the garden.
‘It’s so lovely to see a young man, who has undoubtedly faced so many barriers get something like this that makes him more confident and part of the community,’ said his nominator for the Young Achiever award, who wishes to remain anonymous.
‘Students at Le Murier don’t get the recognition they deserve for their achievements, and Blake has definitely earned it.’
