Helen and Tom McGahy have been nominated for Parents of the Year

Helen and Tom are incredible parents to Romy who is seven, Zephyr who is three and baby Lotus who is only a couple of days old. In November 2021 Romy, at just four years old, was diagnosed with an aggressive form cancer which has a survival rate of 50%.

‘They worked as a team in operation mode and made everything as normal as possible for Zephyr,’ said Jessica Mauger, their nominator who has known Helen for 15 years. 

Helen and Tom relocated to Southampton during the 18 months of Romy’s treatment, which included intense chemotherapy, major surgery, radiation in London and immunotherapy.

‘It is touching to be nominated for this, it is so lovely for even one person to acknowledge that they think you are doing a good job,’ said Helen and Tom, when asked how they felt about being nominated. 

‘The continual care and beauty they hold in the family’s relationship,’ said another nominator is what makes this family as strong as they are. 

A childhood cancer diagnosis has drastically changed Helen and Tom’s lives but giving Romy and Zephyr as normal a childhood as possible has always been their priority and seeing the bond between Romy and Zephyr and how they have taken everything in their stride is what makes Helen and Tom very proud parents.
