The unwavering support of Alderney parents Lisa and Steven Ledger through their daughter’s gruelling medical journey has seen them nominated for Parents of the Year.
When Abigail Ledger was 16 she was diagnosed with a life-long rare genetic condition involving tumours, starting off as benign, but over the years three more were discovered and she was diagnosed with stage one cancer.
‘It was a long recovery and a difficult one and they stuck by me. I’ll never forget my mum’s face when I woke up from surgery covered in tubes, cannulas and blood, she called my dad crying with happiness that I woke up,’ said Abigail.
‘She sat there for over six hours waiting for me to come out and visited me everyday in hospital, helping me get back to Alderney and caring for me with my dad as I couldn’t move for two weeks.’
Lisa said she would do whatever it takes for her daughter.
‘What we’ve been through these last couple of years has been challenging and difficult but as a parent we never crumbled and kept strong,’ she said.
‘We see it as part of our promises when we bring children into this world, never expecting a thanks so I’m touched.’
