ONCE upon a time, the Guille-Alles Children’s Library was nominated for their efforts in Diversity and Inclusion within its town base, as well as across the island.
The children's library, which was redesigned five years ago, offers events including ‘Drag Queen Story Hour’ and talks such as ‘But You Don’t Look Autistic’ to make it accessible for everyone, no matter age or ability, and puts on free activities during the holidays.
‘The set up, but most of all the wonderful staff, make it the most welcome place, my daughter loves it,’ said Emily Tostevin who, with Keith McAndrew, nominated the Guille-Alles team.
‘[They] are all so enthusiastic – they are excellent role models for promoting reading and the entire library is excellent at promoting inclusion and diversity. There is an enormous range of material suitable for different ages allowing anyone to read more about a range of issues from mental health, race, LGBTQ+ etc.’
Not only have the team and their events been recognised, but Emily said she knew the children’s library was one place in town she could comfortably breastfeed.
‘We are so lucky in Guernsey to have the most wonderful, engaging and inclusive library.’
