FAILING eyesight has not slowed down Overcoming Adversity nominee Pete Torode, whose adoption of sight-loss technology has allowed him to continue working full-time.
He was born with undiagnosed glaucoma which led to him only having one usable eye, and in 2019, following a couple of surgeries to fix further deterioration, he suffered a retinal detachment.
His nominator Jess Torode said she was proud of how he has handled it all.
‘The setbacks could have devastated him, however he chose to see it as an opportunity and has learnt Braille, embraced screen readers and any technology which would benefit not only him but others needing assistance too,’ she said.
Through using aids such as digital Braille readers and slate and stylus, Mr Torode has been able to stay working full time at Skipton International and said he has even been able to look at the silver linings.
‘I’d lost the ability to write a note, a list and literally anything useful, so I got stuck into learning Braille which is a lost art,’ he said.
‘On the bright side I can now read in the dark and I no longer have to lean in to look at my screen. My posture is incredible now.’
