GSPCA has been nominated for the Emergency Hero of the Year award

‘For over 151 years the GSPCA have worked and continue to work 24/7 helping the animals of Guernsey and our community,’ said their nominator, Steve Byrne.

Every year, the GSPCA handles cases related to 200 stray dogs, 200 car-related injuries to cats, 500 loose farm animals, 300 sick and injured birds, 500 rabbits, up to 700 hedgehogs, and this year, the most seal pups they have ever seen.

‘We often have multiple ambulances out on the road carrying out emergency care and rescues as well as investigating cruelty.’

This cruelty can be manifested in the illegal importations of puppies, or even a house with 60 rabbits.

‘From Barnacle Bill the loggerhead turtle to lizards and snakes found in suitcases from foreign climes, the GSPCA never knows what it will be faced with next.

‘The GSPCA, made up of staff and volunteers, ensures a 24 hour ambulance service as well as the shelter having someone on call around the clock to help those in need.’
