Community First Responders have been nominated for the Emergency Hero of the Year

The voluntary efforts of Guernsey’s Community First Responders have been praised through a nomination for Emergency Hero of the Year.

At time of writing, about nine volunteers give up their time to respond to priority one emergency 999 calls which could include cardiac arrests, severe bleeding or breathing difficulties, and provide support and immediate first aid to patients until ambulances arrive.

‘They all have day jobs and they carry out this as unpaid work alongside their day-to-day commitments,’ said the group’s nominator, who wishes to remain anonymous.

‘I believe this shows real commitment and care to the wellbeing and safety of our Guernsey community ensuring that help is close by, wherever possible to all across the island.’

The Community First Responders’ work does not cease when an ambulance arrives, as they not only support crews in delivery of care but they also focus on preparing future volunteers as they look to expand.

‘They give up their own time, on a voluntary basis, to attend calls and also to carry out all training required to be a CFR, which is a significant amount.’
