Dr Michael Van Den Bossche has been nominated for the Emergency Hero of the Year award

In April 2024, Katherine Marsh’s eight-year-old daughter developed appendicitis.

She had surgery – but then shortly afterwards was struck by sepsis which landed her in the ICU fighting for her life.

‘Had it not been for Michael’s quick-thinking actions and practice on the morning of her second surgery, I have no doubt in my mind that things could have ended up very differently as she remained in a highly critical condition for the first 12 hours,’ Katherine said.

‘Ohlin is only eight, but holds Michael in the highest regard and speaks about him often. 

‘He’s made a profound impact on her life. 

‘Not only did he save her life, but the care he provided to Ohlin post-surgery was just above and beyond. 

‘He took her under his care and made all executive decisions within his duty. 

‘Ohlin is my hero, but I know that Michael is Ohlin’s hero. 

‘Many people will just assume Michael was doing his job, but he really did his job and more. 

‘His caring nature and professionalism really helped us as a family get through the horrific events we endured. 

‘I don’t think we’ll ever be able to repay Michael, but I hope this nomination goes some way of expressing our thanks and gratitude.’
