‘The support given to the emergency services is where the Guernsey Civil Protection (GCP) makes the most impact – often you will see civil protection personnel supporting the services at all hours of the day, be it at major traffic accidents or large structure fires, where they assist in traffic management allowing service personnel to concentrate on the incidents,’ said their anonymous nominator.
They described GCP as ‘the silent partner’ to the emergency services.
GCP is found assisting at every major island event, from the Liberation cavalcade to the royal visit.
They have kept the lighting going in A&E when switching over generators, they were present at the Octopus fire from 4.30am to 6.30pm, helping fill up oxygen and bottles for the firefighters and managed the ‘five days of complete bedlam’ at the Island Games.
‘On behalf of everyone involved with Guernsey Civil Protection, I am delighted that our work within the Bailiwick has again been acknowledged and would like to thank our nominator,’ said Dave Hodge, civil protection officer.
‘The team of 30 personnel are on-call 24/7 and deploy voluntarily no matter what the weather, time of day or task may be.
‘Much of their work is seen and appreciated by the public, but they also contribute a huge amount of effort to tasks which are not so publicly visible, but nevertheless vital to supporting the island’s emergency services, and weekly training ensures their skills are kept up to date.’
