REACHING a 50th anniversary is a special milestone and for Yan Milner, fencing still means everything to him, even after passing his golden anniversary of being involved with the sport.
Within his five decades, Yan has also volunteered his time as part of the Sarnia Sword Club for 30 years, holding various positions within the committee over that time.
The 67-year-old has also worked to share his ‘lifelong passion’ with the younger generation by organising fencing tasters and classes for school children, and creating a pop-up booth at events such as Sports Commission Family Fun Day or Bowel Cancer Awareness Day.
Yan’s nominator Lauren Hallett believed his commitment and passion were worthy of a nomination after all of these years.
‘Yan’s plans for the future are to retire from his occupation so he can spend even more time volunteering to encourage young people to try fencing as it’s such a good sport for children who tend to not fit in to other sports like football and netball and so on,’ Lauren said.
Yan said that one of the main reasons he loved fencing is because it provides the opportunity to meet people from all walks of life with the same love.
