Ahead of the Guernsey Dynamics team heading to Ireland to compete in the George Best Community Cup, the team’s football coaches have been nominated for Sports Volunteer of the Year.
Since it was established in 2008, Guernsey Dynamics has been the only learning disability football club on island and offers support for children above the age of 14.
Jorge Gois was one of the nominators of the coaching team, which consists of Marc Le Page and Rose Corbet, as well as Rose’s husband Phil, who helps the team train at Les Maingys Activity Centre every Monday evening.
‘They are extremely good at coaching us and to push us to our limits – something never before seen in the history of Guernsey football,’ Jorge said.
‘They recruit people and football players with disabilities making it different from other local football teams, and sometimes the whole team does other things as a group like quizzes or takeaways. They also go to places such as Jersey or Belfast to test players’ skills on other teams.’
Another nominator is Aimee Corbet, Phil and Rose’s daughter. ‘I don’t think my parents get recognition for how much they do. Seeing improvement in the players is the most rewarding thing about coaching the team.’
‘Rose and Marc have really helped to push Guernsey Disability Football forward and continue to strive for success in their field,’ said Joe Hind, another nominator whose eighteen-year-old son plays with the team.
Phil, Rose and Marc are the only qualified coaches of the voluntary organisation that continues to see confidence and spirit in those that have developed a love for football.
