Having overcome many barriers against the Guernsey Aikido Club including a heart attack and Covid-19, Andy Garnham’s hard work to re-launch the club is being recognised with a nomination for Sports Volunteer of the Year.
Andy was keen to rekindle the friendly atmosphere the club had before it fell victim to coronavirus, and was eager to build people’s confidence back up with the sport as well as get back to peak health himself.
Now, a year on, Andy, who has practised aikido for over two decades and karate for around 20 more, teaches five members while also balancing shift work at the hospital.
‘He spends time with each student and caters for all abilities,’ said nominator Keith McAndrew. ‘When training with us on a Sunday morning, he will often teach us having come straight from work – I have been completely blown away by his technical ability, teaching skill and the time he gives up every week to support the club.’
