Darren was born in Guernsey, grew up in the local arts scene, and went to Winchester University before returning to help run the theatre group Swats. Darren then returned to the UK for an eight-year period before moving back in 2018. He set up Musical Theatre Guernsey in 2020 for people who were looking for an arts outlet during lockdown.
‘I’d like to emphasise its inclusive nature, allowing anybody and everybody to come and get involved, which gives it its edge and allows people to access arts.
‘People from all walks of life and varying abilities are encouraged to participate in the shows.
We’ve got a whole range of people with a learning or physical barrier and a lot of people who come to us through social prescribing, as well as ex-offenders. We’re currently teaming up with community service to allow people to come in.
‘We most recently played A Midsummer Night’s Dream on 11-15 July.’
Darren’s award nominator, who wished to remain anonymous, thanked him for his contributions.
‘They put on a lot of shows and musicals which are completely inclusive of everyone and they do a huge amount for charity.
‘Coming soon is a concert to allow people who have disabilities or lack of funds which prevent them from accessing the theatre and raising money to allow people to attend from those backgrounds.’
