Penelope Dawes

Penelope Dawes has been nominated for the Arts Contribution award, sponsored by Moonpig.

‘Pen has recently had her book Once Upon An Island published, a children’s book of Guernsey folklore, which she wrote and illustrated herself,’ said her nominator, who wishes to remain anonymous.

The book is a children’s version of Guernsey Folklore, which was published in 1903 by Sir Edgar MacCulloch.

‘But she didn’t stop there, pro bono she created a nature trail whereby at each location of a tale children and their families can enjoy the tale including a spoken version using a QR code.

‘Penny had to obtain permission from numerous authorities including the National Trust, Vale Common and the Planning Department.

‘She has worked with schools on art projects, notably Melrose, where she created a wall mural and taught students all about the work of Beatrix Potter and they drew their pets in her style.’

Her nominator said that Penelope has helped out in Guernsey Arts events, local filmmaking, jewellery and the National Trust has asked her to illustrate two more books set on the island.

Penelope has lived in Guernsey since she was two years old and has long harboured an interest in Guernsey folklore.

She previously worked in London in the TV and film industry but returned home during lockdown when she took up the project.

‘Penny has and continues to contribute to Guernsey’s art community, much of it at no financial gain to herself.

‘This award would significantly enhance her growing and well-deserved reputation.’
