DESCRIBED as ‘a great leader, humble, hands-on and supportive,’ Garin Dart has been nominated for Sustainability Hero of the Year for his eco efforts at his hotel.
The general manager of Le Pommier has implemented a two-acre greenhouse only a few hundred metres away from the hotel where fresh produce is grown. It uses a borehole for water.
He also works with Guernsey Seaweed to reduce unsustainable plastic usage such as with shampoo bottles.
‘I’ve always been interested in sustainability and it’s also great to keep money within the local community. With the greenhouse it is not only ecologically good but it gives us literally the freshest product possible when it only travels a few hundred metres before getting to our kitchen,’ said Garin.
Nominator Migjae Santos added that Garin has fostered an eco-friendly culture within the hotel.
‘His vision of going green in the hospitality industry is an inspiration. We’ve also lessened the usage of paper to reduce our carbon footprint and have planted some trees to help the environment and for next generations.’
