Penny Dawes has been nominated for the Arts Contribution award

‘PENNY puts all of her passion and love for children together with the passion for art to create incredible ideas toward getting children excited about their home in Guernsey,’ said her nominator Bea Smith.

‘She’s so passionate about children and giving them quality learning. She really wants to teach them about the history of our island, and bring out education that isn’t talked about as much.’

‘Penny put hard work, time and effort into creating the Guernsey Folklore Trail for children to follow along with to find characters of her book, written and illustrated entirely by her in her early-to-mid 20s.’

The illustrations are done using fine-liner, a technique which can be a very time-consuming. The shortest piece took Penny 12 hours to complete, the longest one a mighty 24 hours.

This outdoors-themed, highly interactive method of teaching is driven by Penny’s belief that creativity is vital to children and their self-belief.

Penny’s Folklore trailcards can be picked up from Candie Museum, with 20 stops to see and learn from. Once they are ticked off, the new folklorists can receive a special badge.
