Climb is a charity that provides climbing, hill walking and mountaineering activities.
It has been running for two years, and was set up for those who would struggle to access climbing through mainstream groups for reasons of health, disability, cost or confidence.
Director Chris Harvey said: ‘My wife and I are both keen climbers, and we wanted to share that experience with people that wouldn’t be able to otherwise experience climbing.’
Climb supports participation of under-represented groups and works with individuals and organisations such as Bailiwick Social Prescribing, Autism Guernsey, the Youth Commission, Les Voies School and Guernsey Blind.
Nominator Michael Ellis joined Climb through the Bailiwick Social Prescribing scheme in May last year, and is registered blind and autistic.
‘It has been amazing start to finish. I always feel so comfortable in that environment,’ he said.
Mr Ellis, 51, has recently completed his indoor climbing assistant qualification, facilitated by Climb, and will participate in UK paraclimbing events later this year.
‘My disabilities or other difficulties have never ever been an issue, but conversely it has given me immense achievement and enjoyment,’ he said.
‘The whole approach is inclusive. Each participant will have different goals and needs, and every interaction and achievement is commended. No circumstances, needs or disability are a barrier.’
