SHARON MCHENRY has been nominated for the MSG-sponsored Emergency Hero of the Year award for ‘her skill, knowledge and persistence whilst performing CPR’.
When her colleague Helen Ridley began having a brain aneurysm at work last November, Sharon and several other colleagues stepped in to look after Helen while waiting for the emergency services to arrive.
On two occasions, Helen stopped breathing. Sharon therefore administered mouth to mouth and then full CPR, successfully managing to restart Helen’s heart and breathing.
Sharon said: ‘In the moment I didn’t think, I just acted. To be honest we really thought she wasn’t going to make it.’
Helen was transferred to the UK for emergency brain surgery followed by months of recovery over here in Guernsey.
Sharon added: ‘I would say we are a close-knit firm. There is a good vibe of compassion. Helen is such a strong lady.’
Helen said: ‘It is safe to say without these incredible people I wouldn’t be here today. I owe them my life. I just hope this nomination goes a little towards saying thank you and showing them just how indebted I am to them.’
Helen is now back at work as a receptionist for Saffery Champness.
