LE MARCHANT WARD at the Princess Elizabeth hospital has been nominated for the Ravenscroft-sponsored Angel of the Year award for staff members’ support that went ‘above and beyond’.

They were nominated by Karen Billien, who was helped by the ward when her husband Wayne suffered a stroke in April 2020.

‘The whole team supported me and my family through what was the worst seven months of our lives,’ she said.

‘He was flown to Southampton, where he underwent intensive care and brain surgery.

‘He was then transferred to Le Marchant Ward, where his rehabilitation began.’

‘The nursing staff were amazing – they were so patient, with both him and me.

‘Unfortunately Wayne had a seizure on a home visit and it was decided that no more could be done for him.

‘We were taken back to Le Marchant Ward, where my family and I basically moved into Wayne’s room to spend night and day with him.

‘Wayne passed away peacefully with his family that night.

‘All the doctors and staff on this ward work so hard – there is no sitting around drinking coffee, it is very hands-on.

‘There were many times they went above and beyond what anyone would have expected and continued supporting us until the end.’
