STRONG leadership by Gavin St Pier is what helped to get Guernsey safety through the recent coronavirus pandemic and islander John Blatchford has now nominated him for the Pride of Guernsey Emergency Hero category.

The Policy & Resources president is also the chairman of the Civil Contingencies Authority and became a common sight in recent months announcing the way forward for the island.

Mr Blatchford said that the overall message from the CCA and Deputy St Pier’s calm attitude throughout the pandemic has been exactly what the island needed.

‘Looking at how Jersey handled the crisis, and it was a crisis, and the way the UK handled their crisis, I think we excelled a billion times better,’ he said.

While that has been a team effort, Mr Blatchford said Deputy St Pier’s attitude has been hugely important to islanders.

‘He’s been honest and called it like a shovel,’ he said.

‘We knew exactly where we stood. I think it was a vital thing to do. We are all intelligent and we don’t want false promises. He never did that and I think he should be honoured for it.’
