ALONA ZAKOLAPINA would be a worthy winner of the Carer of the Year award, according to Donna Reid.

When her son’s father, James, had a stroke last year he was taken into the care of Chateau du Village Private Nursing Home, where Ms Zakolapina is activities co-ordinator.

‘James was told he would never walk again and Alona took it upon herself during lockdown to read up on exercises and techniques to help him,’ said Ms Reid.

‘She worked with James day in and day out. I can only say it’s a miracle that James can now stand and walk, albeit holding onto a fence with one hand. He is also practising getting in and out of his bed unaided.

‘Alona has also been providing therapy to James’ arm and he is regaining some feeling and movement in his fingers.

‘What a wonderful lady she is – and she is determined to help James regain some dignity and life.’
