Pride of Guernsey: Guernsey Music Centre

A NOMINEE really couldn’t get a more enthusiastic recommendation. ‘Come on everyone in Guernsey that has a connection with any kind of music, write in and support surely the standout island group for honours in 2019, the Guernsey Music Centre.’ So says Roy Sarre in nominating the organisation for the Moonpig-sponsored Arts Contribution of the Year Award.

‘Come on everyone in Guernsey that has a connection with any kind of music, write in and support surely the standout island group for honours in 2019, the Guernsey Music Centre.’

So says Roy Sarre in nominating the organisation for the Moonpig-sponsored Arts Contribution of the Year Award.

‘Mervyn Grand [the outgoing head of the service] and his amazing team of exceptional teachers and musicians, as well as the administrative and support groups, all of them enthusing daily and weekly 750 to 800 willing all-age children and young people to take up music and to sing and to play. It is also providing hundreds of fresh young minds with a choice of instruments for a lifetime’s enjoyment of music.’

Roy said that all on-island schools are connected to the Guernsey Music Centre – but its reach extends beyond our shores.

‘It is a much-admired institution by school teachers and musicians in the UK and thankfully it is supported by the States of Guernsey, as well as parents and friends.

‘This is Guernsey Music Centre’s year – it’s their 40th birthday. Thirty thousand young musicians have, still are, and will continue to make music for all of Guernsey, the Bailiwick and beyond.’
