PAULA and Bridget Gilbert, of Gilberts Community Cafe, have been nominated for the Alexander Daniels-sponsored Customer Service of the Year Award for the change they have brought to the cafe at Le Grand Courtil. The Gilberts have taken over the premises, formerly known as the Magnolia Tree cafe, and transformed it into a family-run establishment aptly called Gilbert’s Cafe.
Located in St Martin’s at the extra-care housing development, the cafe is open to everyone, not just residents, and offers a range of food all freshly made on the premises.
They were nominated by Emily Nuttal, who said: ‘Ever since Paula and Bridget and their amazing team of waitresses and staff have taken on the restaurant they have worked tirelessly to make a difference to residents and visitors.
‘They encourage community spirit and making a difference in any way they can, whether supporting charity or giving up special holidays, such as Liberation Day, to make everyone feel part of the celebrations.
‘Nothing is ever too much trouble and they will always do their best to meet everyone’s needs and make everyone’s day so much more and for that they deserve to be rewarded.’
Co-owner Ms Gilbert said: ‘We are very happy. We only took over in February so we must be doing something right.
‘We are trying to build a community-based cafe for the whole community around here. Like Tonight we are doing our first meat draw so we can give a social occasion for the residents up here and all who want to come down.’
