Pride of Guernsey: Robert Steen

ROBERT STEEN, deputy manager at Les Cotils, has been nominated for the Guernsey Gas-sponsored Warm Welcome of the Year award for his consistent abilities in hospitality over a long career and his ‘effervescent’ personality.

Nominator Janine Le Sauvage felt Mr Steen’s welcoming manner has never changed.
‘When he took on the Ambassador Hotel, myself and many friends, both local and from overseas, chose to socialise and party there because of him,’ she said,
‘It was him and his effervescent personality that made everyone feel welcome and happy.
‘We followed him wherever he went and now at Le Cotils, he has welcomed me and my friends for lunches, dinners, parties and more.
‘Nothing is ever too much trouble and because of him, I held my 65th and 70th birthdays wherever he was working.
‘I have now chosen Les Cotils to celebrate my 73rd birthday because of him.’
Mr Steen’s second nominator, Ivor Vaughan, thought he deserved the award because he is a ‘great ambassador’ for the island.
‘Robert always extends a very generous welcome to guests old and new,’ he said.
‘He’s a real professional, having been in in the hotel/hospitality business all his working life.
‘He’s been part of Guernsey hospitality for decades. Always there, always consistent, he sells the island well.
‘He is a good ambassador for us all.
‘Because of him guests on and off island return year after year. He truly is Mr Hospitality, he’s a character.’
