36 islanders shortlisted for Pride of Guernsey Awards

NEARLY 20,000 votes were cast as islanders decided who would be finalists for the inaugural Guernsey Press Pride of Guernsey Awards.

Aimed at celebrating those islanders doing extraordinary things every day, they had almost 250 people or groups to choose from, nominated across 12 categories.

Now islanders have narrowed it down to three in each class, leaving the judges – who will pick the eventual winners – with a seriously tough job on their hands.

In the Ravenscroft-sponsored Angel of the Year category, for medical professionals, the shortlist features nurses Lollie Mclean and Andrea Inder, and midwife Eilis Rock.

The Jonah Beats music festival team, Gadoc chairwoman Lisa Johnston and music journalist Tom Girard have made the shortlist for the Moonpig-backed Arts Contribution category.

Mum Jan Aslett, Headway service manager Orla-Marie Manning and teenage carer Alicia Carter are on the shortlist for the Specsavers Carer of the Year award.

In the Rossborough Emergency Hero class, the shortlist is the RNLI Lifeboat Crew, Geoff George from the GSPCA and police officer Laura Furby.

Grandparents Jean Tanner, Ron and Bridie Harnden, and Nan and Bill Hooper were nominated for the Channel Islands Co-operative-sponsored Grandparent/s of the Year award.

In the Christie’s Group Parent/s of the Year award, Emma and Hubert Nicolle, Clare Backlund-Leale and Kate Groves have been shortlisted.

Vera Tracy, Michaela Fallaize, and Sue and Mike Brock were shortlisted in the Swoffers Neighbour of the Year category.

In the Guernsey College of Further Education Overcoming Adversity category, the shortlist is Jessica Pearce, who has always helped support her big sister who has Niemann Pick disease type C, Jonah Gillingham, who has atypical haemolytic uraemic syndrome, and Anthony McMahon, who has undergone extensive surgery on his legs and hips.

The West Show Committee, St Martin’s stalwarts John and Marilyn Garnham and Andrew Pouteaux, who organises the Art of Living volunteers, were all shortlisted in the OCS Parish Champion class.

Teacher Dr Vanessa Mitchell, Daniella Dyke and Karlie Bichard have been shortlisted in the Garenne Teacher of the Year category.

In the RefCo Welcome of the Year class, Les Cotils deputy manager Robert Steen, tourist trade worker David Willcocks and restaurant Village East were shortlisted.

Youngsters George Garnett, Jack McGrath and Elliot Clarke made the shortlist for the Butterfield Young Achiever award.

Guernsey Press managing director Mark Lewis said he was really pleased with how many votes had been cast.

‘We had the most votes for Teacher of the Year, as there was so many nominations,’ he said.

‘But there was a good degree of voting across the board. I’m looking forward to the judging, but I am glad I am not one of the people having to decide.’

There will be three judges for each award – one from the sponsor, a Guernsey Press representative and an independent judge. This will take place at the OGH on Monday 12 September, thanks to the kind support of Red Carnation Hotels.

All those shortlisted will go forward to our Oscar-style awards ceremony at a transformed Guernsey Press HQ on Saturday 8 October, with guest hosts Jo and Andy Priaulx, where the winners will be revealed.NEARLY 20,000 votes were cast as islanders decided who would be finalists for the inaugural Guernsey Press Pride of Guernsey Awards.
