At 17 years old James, a Guernsey ambulance cadet, qualified as a finalist in the national Cadet of the Year competition.
James has been with St John’s ambulance for 10 years, starting as a badger before becoming a cadet.
‘I’m gobsmacked, I wasn’t expecting this,’ said James when told of his nomination.
His nominator, who wished to remain anonymous, said James was named 2023 district cadet of the year.
Being there for someone in need with the patient knowing they are safe is an amazing feeling for James.
‘Knowing that a patient will leave your care in a better condition is one of the most rewarding things about it,’ said James.
He is a senior cadet and helps run the unit by leading groups of junior cadets.
James really enjoys teaching the younger cadets as he remembers when he was young and how the older ones made the transition easier for him.
Being a St John’s cadet has opened his eyes, he said.
'Now I don’t go anywhere without a first aid kit’, he said.
James started a mental health course with his school so he can provide more rounded care to the people who need it, he said.
At just 17 James has achieved so much as a St John’s ambulance cadet and now has plans looking forward to head off-island to expand his knowledge still further.
