EXTENDING kindness during a difficult time lead one neighbour to nominate Chris Baker for Neighbour of the Year.

Sponsored by Guernsey Gas, the category showcases local heroes who make a difference to their neighbourhood community, making life a little better.

Nominator Alan Morton said: ‘In February 2019 I had a stroke and my neighbours did so much to help me. Chris brought all that I needed from my house up to Le Marchant Ward.’

Ensuring Mr Morton had all he needed was carried out with no fuss.

‘Nothing was too much trouble – from looking after my house to bringing me cash and clothing, and anything I needed to help me.’

Kindness shown during this time was ‘absolutely amazing’.

‘When I was eventually allowed home, they had food, bread and milk stocked up in my kitchen.’

This neighbourliness has been extended ever since.

‘After my stroke I am now partially sighted in my right eye and my balance is difficult. I need a walking stick. I do not drive any more and don’t go out a lot, only to Age Concern and Jubilee House, for which I get picked up in a bus.’

Getting the shopping in is no bother.

‘To this day whenever he goes shopping he comes and asks if I need anything, which happens regularly.’

Living in a close community is something to be thankful for, with the other neighbours all being very close.

‘I am so, so grateful for the kindness with the help he gives me. It is amazing. All that he has done has helped me to accept the fact of my disability. My near neighbours have been so kind too. I hope this will help.’
