Time for Pride

Our Pride of Guernsey Awards return to recognise special individuals in our community

THE PRIDE of Guernsey Awards are back for a third year, giving islanders their chance to recognise the individuals at the centre of our community.

Hundreds of nominations for islanders over the years have recognised everyone from sporting heroes who inspire success, to the waitress who makes a customer’s day and the many selfless carers and neighbours who contribute so much to island life.

After a public vote, the winners and runners up are then honoured at a glitzy special awards ceremony on 6 October.

Launched by The Guernsey Press in 2016, the votes poured in for the Pride of Guernsey Awards in their thousands once again last year.

Now colleagues, students, friends and family have another chance to see the people they admire make the news for their unsung hard work and good deeds over the last year and beyond.

There are 13 categories for 2018 including a new introduction, the Customer Service Award.

They are: Emergency Hero of the Year (aimed at our 999 responders), Angel of the Year (for our medics and nurses), Warm Welcome of the Year (for those working in hospitality), Customer Care Award (for those in customer service). Neighbour of the Year, Carer of the Year, Parish Champion of the Year and Teacher of the Year, Grandparents and Parents of the Year as well as Young Achievers, Arts Contribution of the Year and those who have overcome adversity.

New sponsors this year include Alexander Daniels for the Customer Service Award, Guernsey Gas who have taken on the Warm Welcome of the Year and A7 Design sponsoring Parish Champion of the Year.

Guernsey Press managing director Mark Lewis said that with the awards now entering their third year it was amazing how they have become part of island life so quickly: ‘The concept of transforming the Guernsey Press head-quarters before the inaugural awards was considered and laughed off,’ he said.

‘Now, it would be difficult to imagine the awards ceremony taking place anywhere else.

‘We have three new sponsors this year which are all quality names and that align brilliantly with our fantastic existing sponsors and partners, the majority of whom have been with us since the start of this journey and we couldn’t do this without.

‘I look forward to the public nominations coming in.’

Look out for our nomination forms soon.
